Our Grade 1 Music Theory course is the perfect first step into music theory. Whether you’re learning an instrument, starting to read music, or planning to work towards Grade 5 Theory in the future, this course will give you a solid foundation to build on.
You don’t need any prior experience – we’ll start right from the basics. By the end of the course, you’ll feel more confident reading, understanding, and making sense of written music.

Who is this course for?
This course is ideal for beginners of all ages who want to understand the basics of music theory. It’s perfect if you’re just starting out, want to read music more confidently, or are preparing to work towards Grade 5 Theory in the future. Since it's an online course, we recommend the minimum age of participants to be above 7.
What do I need to do the course?
You’ll need:

The ABRSM Discovering Music Theory Grade 1 book (so you can follow along and practise between classes)
What if I can’t attend one of the sessions?
Don’t worry – all sessions are recorded and shared with you. You’ll be able to catch up in your own time if you miss a class.
When can I take the exam?
The ABRSM Grade 1 Theory exam is available on demand through the ABRSM website. This means you can book and take it at any time after completing the course, whenever you feel ready.
