Online ABRSM Grade 4 Theory Course

Our Grade 4 Music Theory course is ideal if you’ve already studied some theory and are ready to explore more advanced ideas in rhythm, pitch, and harmony. At this level, you’ll develop a deeper understanding of how music is built and strengthen the skills you’ll need for Grade 5 Theory and beyond.
This course is best suited for students who have the understanding of theory up to grade 3.

  • 💵 Cost: only £175 for the entire course (ABRSM Discovering Music Theory Grade 4 Book is not included in the course price)

What You'll Learn - key concepts

  • Rhythm & Metre – double-dotted notes, duplets, breves, and new simple and compound time signatures.

  • Pitch & Reading Music – alto clef, double sharps and flats, and enharmonic equivalents.

  • Keys & Scales – new major and minor scales, chromatic scales, and technical names for the degrees of the scale.

  • Intervals & Chords – recognising augmented and diminished intervals, and working with primary triads in root position.

  • Music in Context – connecting theory to the way real music is written and performed.

Who is this course for?

Grade 4 is designed for learners who have already studied music theory to around Grade 3 level (or equivalent). It’s a good fit for children aged 7/8+ who are confident readers, as well as adult learners who want to deepen their understanding of how music works.

What do I need to do the course?

You’ll need:

  • Access to Zoom for the live sessions

  • The ABRSM Discovering Music Theory Grade 4 book (so you can follow along and practise between classes)

What if I can’t attend one of the sessions?

Don’t worry – all sessions are recorded and shared with you. You’ll be able to catch up in your own time if you miss a class.

When can I take the exam?

The ABRSM Grade 4 Theory exam is available on demand through the ABRSM website. This means you can book and take it at any time after completing the course, whenever you feel ready.
