Halloween is the perfect time to explore the spookier side of classical music! From ghostly dances to thundering organ chords, composers have long loved to paint eerie, mysterious scenes through sound. Here are five spine-tingling pieces that will send shivers down your spine — and delight your students or audience this spooky season!
🎹 1. J.S. Bach – Toccata and Fugue in D Minor
No Halloween playlist is complete without Bach’s legendary Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. The dramatic opening on the organ has become the ultimate soundtrack for haunted houses and classic horror movies. With its bold, echoing notes and dark harmonies, this piece sets the perfect tone for any spooky celebration.
🕯️ Fun fact: We still don’t know exactly why Bach wrote this piece — but it’s been giving chills to listeners for over 250 years!
💀 2. Giuseppe Verdi – Dies Irae from Requiem
Verdi’s Dies Irae (“Day of Wrath”) is pure drama. It begins with crashing drums, powerful choral shouts, and intense orchestral fire — a musical depiction of Judgment Day. This scene has been used in countless films to evoke fear and awe, and it’s one of the most terrifyingly beautiful moments in all of classical music.
🔥 Listen to it with the lights off for the full effect!
☠️ 3. Camille Saint-Saëns – Danse Macabre
In this mischievous masterpiece, Saint-Saëns imagines skeletons rising from their graves at midnight to dance until dawn, led by Death himself playing the violin. The xylophone’s rattling notes perfectly mimic the sound of clattering bones — it’s playful, spooky, and unforgettable.

🧙♂️ 4. Paul Dukas – The Sorcerer’s Apprentice
If this title sounds familiar, you’ve probably seen Mickey Mouse in Disney’s Fantasia! Dukas’s piece tells the story of a young apprentice who tries to use magic to do his chores… only to have the enchanted broomsticks spiral out of control. The swirling melodies and wild crescendos make this one a Halloween must-hear for kids and adults alike.
🎩 Lesson idea: Try having students describe the story as they listen — it’s a great way to connect music and imagination!
🌙 5. Modest Mussorgsky – Night on Bald Mountain
This thrilling piece is based on a Russian legend about witches gathering on a mountaintop to dance and celebrate the dark forces. Mussorgsky’s wild rhythms and bold brass lines create a powerful, chaotic sound that ends with the calm of dawn. Like Dukas’ piece, it’s also famous from Fantasia — and it’s sure to raise a few goosebumps!
